Sharp tailoring and hints of the military inspired have been catwalk staples for the past few seasons, this Fall/Winter however they were updated with a focus on paired down, sharper tailoring and more refined shapes. These pieces were used to contrast against the very ethereal loose and transparent silhouette that we saw on the runways last season and mixed with eye catching accessories to give each look a truly unique feel. Using the new, nautical accents from the Fall/Winter runways, Shot in secret locations in the heart of Florence, inspired by the epic voyages of pirates, explorers and sailors,we created a story using some of the coming season’s key pieces. Here, we introduce you to the characters of our story and explain a little more about how they worked the trend each in their own personal way.

The Captain, marching the corridors in an Alexander Mcqueen double-breasted coat, added a touch of glam to the proceedings in shimmering sequined trousers by n°21 and laced-up Gianvito Rossi boots. In order to pull rank, the look was finished with a captain’s hat by Hugo Pratt for Corto Maltese.

The enchanting First-mate worked transparent pieces and colourful details in to her look to give this season’s take on the nautical trend a softer and more feminine feel. In an open naval Balmain jacket adorned in gold ribbon braiding, fur shawl by Simonetta Ravizza, we added a risqué transparent silk chiffon MSGM shirt, Alexander McQueen leggings and completed the look with a flash of colour using a pair of electric-blue suede Giuseppe Zanotti platforms.

Channeling Ann Demeulemeester‘s, William Blake inspired, poetic silhouette, the Explorer glided through the dungeons wearing bold gauntlets, Baiba Ripa necklace, vests buttoned high against bare skin and cutaway jackets teamed with powerful triple-laced combat boots.

The Voyager’s Balmain Military jacket is embellished with a Milius by Milan pin, and enhanced by Givenchy‘s fierce Rottweiler t-shirt, Ann Demeulemeester‘s polished leather trousers and Roberto Cavalli‘s destroyed leather boots for a powerful masculine look.

Finally in our story we have the cast away Pirate who added a racier element to our sea faring theme, clad in a red leather and wool jumpsuit by Amaya Arzuaga and a destroyed leather jacket by Tuesday Night Band Practice, we used leather accessories by Givenchy and Fleet Ilya to get the perfect castaway feel and evoke the sensation of new nautical adventures.

You can’t miss the biggest attraction in Via Roma…

riff.jpg
Today Luisa Via Roma is in great turmoil. Pitti Uomo begins, and with it the installation Riff, created by Felice Limosani for Les Copains. Riff, as in refrain, is a metafor for the rythmic tension and melodic patterns of a weaving machine.
In Luisa’s window the installation stands alone with two vintage TFK M15A Telefunken reels which are connected to eachother by a ribbon producing a narration, just like old recording devices used to produce or record sound and action. Stay updated for a video of the reels in action!
Additionally, Les Copains has created two special edition knit cardigans for Luisa Via Roma.

New York, For anyone in the City at the moment, this is for you. The International Center of Photography (ICP) is launching a year long series of exhibits that focus on the history of fashion photography and the relationship between art and fashion. You’ve got time (until May 3rd) to admire the glossy images in fashion magazines 2009 with four exhibitions: “Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now,” “Edward Steichen: In High Fashion: The Condé Nast Years, 1923-1937″, “This Is Not a Fashion Photograph” and “Munkacsi’s Lost Archive”. But the leadoff of the foursome is a blast from the present: a snapping, crackling survey of fashion photography from the last two years. Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, David Seidner and Nick Knight are just some of the photographers being featured throughout the year.
